Many people within the Greater Washington DC metropolitan area have caught a glimpse of one or more of the area’s Bolivian folkloric dance groups performing in parades, festivals and more. The colorful costumes, high display of energy and the sounds of traditional music bring to life a culture rich in tradition and pageantry. To help keep their connection to those traditions, many from the area’s large Bolivian-American community travel back home each February to take part in their homeland’s ultimate festival – “Carnival of Oruro”.
To help promote the festival within the United States, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the National Brewery of Bolivia through their flagship brand ofPacena and the Embassy of the Plurinational State of Bolivia in Washington joined forces to present a taste of Bolivia’s rich dance traditions with hundreds of dancers representing many of the area’s Bolivian dance groups performing in front of the Embassy Sunday afternoon (see photos). Participating was The Pro Bolivian Committee, a local organization based in Northern Virginia with the goal of enhancing and promoting Bolivian culture in our area.
The festival takes place February 4th-9th 2016 in Oruro, Bolivia. For complete details, including a glimpse into Bolivia’s history and traditions, please visit:http://www.boliviaturismo.com.bo/carnaval-oruro-2016.php.
